If you can’t find or recall the details of your homeowners insurance policy, there are several ways to locate it.

To find your homeowners insurance policy, check your email for messages from your insurance provider, contact your insurance agent for a copy, and review your paper documents or recent billing statements. Your home insurance company can typically assist you in locating your policy information and provide you with a copy. Additionally, your mortgage lender may have a copy on file.

It’s wise to store a backup in a secure location like cloud storage or a physical safe so that you have access to your policy whenever you need it.

How to find your homeowners insurance company

Homeowners insurance isn’t public record. There’s no centralized database that logs every home insurance policy in the country. As a result, you won’t be able to find your policy by simply searching your home’s address on the internet.

To figure out which company insures your home, start by checking your files for policy renewal letters or other documentation from the insurance company. If you don’t have any home insurance records, your mortgage lender will have the information on file.

How do I get a copy of my homeowners insurance policy?

Your home insurance company can help you track down your policy information and provide you with a copy of your policy.

“If you need a copy of your policy, reach out to your homeowners insurance company and they should be able to send you that information via mail or email,” says Jennifer Wilbert, assistant vice president of property portfolio for personal insurance property strategy at Travelers.

“Additionally, many insurers now offer mobile apps and websites where the insured can find a lot of information,” she adds. “If you can download an app on your phone or tablet, this is a great way to access and manage your policy information and keep in touch with your insurer.”

It’s a good idea to download and print a physical copy of your policy documents to keep with your other important files. That way, the information is easily accessible if you ever have to file a claim.

How to find a home insurance policy number

Your home insurance policy number is printed on your hard copy and digital insurance documents. The number will also be included in your billing statement. If your insurance is paid through an escrow account with your mortgage company, however, you may not receive bills.

If you’re looking through your insurance documents, the policy number is typically mentioned near the top of the page.

You can also find the policy number by logging into your insurer’s website or mobile app to view your account.
